fiat voluntas tua
Fiat Voluntas Tua is a hand-embroidered and beaded canvas depicting the profound moment of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary to announce the conception of Jesus—a scene that has been reimagined throughout art history in countless forms. Through the tactile and intimate mediums of thread and bead, I offer my own interpretation, using texture, color, and light to evoke its spiritual gravity. Golden rays surrounding Gabriel reflect the magnificence of his divine presence and the awe-inspiring message he bears, while softer blue rays envelop Mary, symbolizing her grace, humility, and divine favor. Though quieter in tone, Mary’s light shimmers with strength, expressing the paradox at the heart of this encounter: overwhelming fear met with unwavering faith, divine power meeting human vulnerability. Created through the slow, intentional process of hand embroidery, the work became a contemplative meditation on the emotional and spiritual transformation within the narrative, allowing me to dwell in the moment of uncertainty and surrender that defines Mary’s response. Ultimately, the piece is both a visual reflection on a sacred text and a personal meditation on faith—the courage to step into the unknown and to echo Mary’s words, fiat voluntas tua (“thy will be done”), even when called along unfamiliar paths.
